Weekly Marketing Rundown - August 16th, 2024

Hi everyone, In this week's edition of Kavanah Media's Weekly Marketing Rundown we will discuss TikTok Group Chats, a review of Meta's ad policies, scams on WhatsApp and more. Let's dive in!

TikTok ads Group chats

TikTok's new group chat feature allows users to share videos with up to 32 people, opening new opportunities for Christian mission teams. This can be an effective way to engage with communities, organize virtual events, and foster a sense of community among followers. However, it’s important to approach these spaces authentically to avoid appearing intrusive. Teams involved in digital engagement can leverage this feature to build communities and interact with seekers on the platform.

While this new feature makes TikTok a more enticing platform for teams around the world, it does not eliminate the security concerns and significant challenges many have faced with TikTok as a platform for digital engagement. TikTok's cybersecurity issues are well documented and partners of Kavanah Media around have reported bans on ad accounts advertising Christian content.

It is still advised for teams to weigh their options regarding potential platforms for digital engagement projects- especially in regards to TikTok.

Facebook's Ad Policies- A Quick Review

If you've used Facebook ads for your digital engagement projects, you're likely familiar with ad rejections. Here are the top five reasons why Facebook may reject ads:

  1. Personal Health and Appearance: Ads should not create or reinforce negative self-image to promote health-related products, such as diet or weight loss items. For instance, avoid using before-and-after images to showcase idealized results.
  2. Unrealistic Outcomes: Ads should not promise or suggest unrealistic results regarding health, weight loss, or economic opportunities.
  3. Unacceptable Business Practices: Ads must not use deceptive or misleading tactics to promote products or services, especially those intended to scam people out of money or personal information. For example, avoid ads that claim to increase Facebook or Instagram likes or followers.
  4. Discriminatory Practices: Ads must not discriminate based on personal attributes like race, ethnicity, gender, religion or disability. For example, do not promote housing or job opportunities based on these personal attributes.
  5. Non-Functional Landing Pages: Ads must direct users to functional landing pages. Avoid pages that obstruct navigation or automatically download files.

For teams engaged in digital engagement the most likely policy violation they may face is the discriminatory practices. If this happens one may be forced to restructure their creatives and CTA's.

It is recommended that teams take extra care to ensure their ads follow Facebook's advertising policies to avoid account restrictions and other disruptions.

WhatsApp Scam Alert and Digital Security for Evangelistic Teams

WhatsApp users are warned about a new scam that targets group chats, posing significant risks to digital security. Scammers are exploiting WhatsApp's group chat feature to deceive users into sharing personal information, potentially leading to identity theft and financial loss. For teams, who often rely on WhatsApp for communication and coordination, this scam is a serious threat. Non-technical members might be particularly vulnerable, making it crucial to educate your team on recognizing these scams and adopting safe practices.

As digital engagement grows, so does the need for vigilance against online threats. By staying informed and implementing robust security protocols, your team can safeguard their communication channels and continue their evangelistic work without interruption.

Instagram Access Restored in Turkey

Turkey has restored access to Instagram after a temporary suspension that sparked widespread concern among users and digital marketers. The restriction, which was swiftly lifted, reflects the volatile nature of digital platform accessibility in certain regions. For teams, especially those working in countries where internet access can be unpredictable, this situation highlights the need for strategic preparedness. It’s essential to monitor local digital policies and have alternative communication channels ready to ensure that your outreach efforts are not disrupted.

As Instagram and other social media platforms play a crucial role in evangelistic outreach, understanding the risks of sudden access changes and planning accordingly is vital. By being proactive in your digital strategy, your team can continue to share the Gospel and maintain connections with those you serve, regardless of external challenges.

WhatsApp About Section for Businesses

WhatsApp has introduced a new information section for business accounts you're messaging, offering more details about these businesses including emails, hours, descriptions, names, phone numbers, addresses, websites and other social media profiles.

Teams utilizing WhatsApp with their digital engagement should take care in ensuring the information displayed there is correct, translated and secure. Is the info listed there something we want seekers to be able to view? Will it push them to further interaction or drive them away? It is often tough to navigate the balance between authenticity and security, but if done correctly this update could aid in brand authenticity.

Meta Introduces AI-Edited Video Ads on Facebook and Instagram: Key Tools for Teams Meta has rolled out new AI-powered tools for video ads on Facebook and Instagram, making content creation more streamlined. These tools include automatic video trimming, scene selection, and format adjustments for different placements. Key features also include a video expansion tool, which resizes videos to fit various formats, an auto music tool that selects background music, and an image animation tool that brings static images to life with simple animations. Truth be told, Kavanah Media team members have seen these tools being quietly rolled out for some time. They have allowed for quicker creation of multiple ad variations, allowing images and videos to be shown in more ad placements. While Google remains the leading search engine, these rising alternatives are attracting users with innovative features that enhance search experiences. For teams, this trend emphasizes the need to diversify digital strategies. As users turn to platforms like TikTok for search, teams should adapt their SEO and content strategies to maintain visibility across various channels.  For more on this, click the link below: https://www.yahoo.com/?err=404&err_url YouTube Expands Shorts Length and Adds Templates: What Teams Should Know In order to compete with TikTok, YouTube is increasing the maximum length of Shorts and adding new video templates. This move allows creators to produce longer short-form content while using templates to streamline video creation. For teams, these updates mean greater flexibility in crafting short videos to engage audiences. With longer content and easy-to-use templates, creating videos should be even easier.  For more on this, click the link below:  https://www.theverge.com/2024/10/3/24260170/youtube-shorts-increased-length-templates-tiktok WhatsApp's New Contact-Saving Feature: What Teams Should Know WhatsApp is testing a feature that lets users save contacts directly within the app without storing them on their phone. If adopted this could simplify contact management for teams and offer some privacy benefits. For teams the advantages include: 1. Privacy: Contacts can be stored within the app, reducing the need to save personal numbers on your phone. 2. Efficiency: Easier access and management of contacts within WhatsApp itself. 3. Clutter-Free: Keep work-related contacts separate from personal ones without filling up your phone directory. This update can streamline communication and improve privacy, especially for teams in sensitive environments. The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) stated that platforms like Facebook cannot use all personal data without restrictions on time or type, meaning only a small portion of Meta's data pool will be permitted for advertising, even with user consent. Rulings like this are already affecting audience targeting. As data privacy laws tighten, advertisers will likely have less and less access for audience targeting. Teams may need to change their marketing strategies as a result. Weekly Marketing Rundown - August 28, 2026 Welcome to this week’s edition of Kavanah Media’s Weekly Marketing Rundown! We’re diving into the latest updates you need to know including Meta's latest AI integrations, Iranian hacks, Instagram growth strategies and more. Enjoying the Weekly Marketing Rundown? Support our work and keep it free for missions teams worldwide: https://www.kavanahmedia.com/donatetoKM Meta to Launch Hatch AI Agent and WhatsApp Integration Meta is launching a smart AI helper named Hatch that can check emails and buy things for you without leaving the app. The company might charge up to $199 per month for premium access while also letting other businesses connect their own bots through WhatsApp. For Mission Teams These new WhatsApp features offer strategic ways to find seekers and make disciples by using AI to instantly engage with people on digital platforms. However, mission teams must carefully evaluate the outputs from these tools. AI tools often hallucinate and there are serious concerns with letting AI handle the very personal work of evangelism. https://thenextweb.com/news/meta-hatch-ai-agent-watermelon-199-subscription Understanding Discontinued Facebook Ad Features So much has changed with Meta advertising over the years that it can be difficult to keep track of everything. Jon Loomer has taken the time to chronicle some of the biggest changes. After reading this list, one thing is very clear: marketing on Meta is very different from what it was and continues to change rapidly. Strategies from just a few months ago can already be outdated. For Mission Teams Mission teams should update their strategy to find seekers because many older ad targeting methods are now obsolete due to platform changes. Understanding these platform changes helps ministries create better digital ads that safely engage modern audiences. https://www.jonloomer.com/qvt/15-discontinued-facebook-ads-features/ Iranian Hackers Shut Down UK Power Plant Hackers from Iran recently broke into the computer systems of a small power plant in the United Kingdom and shut it down for four days. While this attack did not affect the country's main power supply, it marks the first time these hackers successfully stopped a British facility from working. For Mission Teams If may feel like these type of attacks only happen in the non-missions world, but the data would say otherwise. Nonprofit and missions agencies alike are reporting an uptick in attacks. Mission teams, churches, and agencies are encouraged to do due diligence in regards to cybersecurity and operational security. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/08/22/iranian-hackers-shut-down-uk-power-plant/?is=6c9d26923a16288b80f85de0340fba4f6bfb5483bde5c91e5ae0e76242c3259c Anthropic Expands AI Security Audits with Mythos 5 Anthropic recently released a smart computer tool named Mythos 5 that helps companies find and fix hidden security problems in their software code. Even with this advanced tool, human experts still need to review the suggested repairs to make sure they work correctly. For Mission Teams Mission teams and agencies leveraging digital tools of any kind are encouraged to use these same AI tools for cybersecurity, as bad actors will surely use them as well. Groups that do not leverage AI for their own defenses may be left vulnerable. Protecting the personal data of new disciples, employees, and others ensures secure digital engagement and builds a strong foundation for your online ministry strategies. https://www.esecurityplanet.com/cybersecurity/news-anthropic-mythos-5-ai-security-audits/ Instagram Updates Ad Messaging and Searchable Captions Instagram is testing a new tool that automatically sends private messages when people type specific words on your ads. The platform is also making post captions more important for search engines to help users find the stories behind your pictures. For Mission Teams Mission teams can write clear captions to help seekers easily find their content while using the new automated messaging tool to instantly share spiritual resources. https://www.jonloomer.com/reply-to-keywords-meta-ads-feature/ https://wersm.com/instagram-captions-context-search/?utm_source=tldrmarketing Meta Removes Ad Placement Controls Meta is slowly removing the ability for creators to pick exactly which apps or devices show their ads. Instead of completely blocking unwanted locations, advertisers will now need to set special bidding rules to control where their content appears. For Mission Teams Mission teams must update their ad strategies because losing control over ad placements might risk showing ads to contacts outside of desired personas. Ministries should learn to use these new rules to help avoid ad performance issues. https://www.jonloomer.com/meta-removing-placement-controls-ad-sets/ Elementor Pro Vulnerability Exposes WordPress Sites A serious security bug was found in the popular Elementor Pro WordPress plugin that allows hackers to upload bad files. This flaw means attackers could sneak harmful code into websites through the file upload forms and take control of the server. For Mission Teams Mission teams using WordPress to build evangelism websites must update their plugins immediately to stop hackers from taking control of their digital platforms. Keeping software updated protects sensitive seeker information and ensures your ministry websites stay online and safe for visitors. https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/critical-elementor-pro-bug-exposes-wordpress-sites-to-rce-attacks/ Google Simplifies Tagging Tools for Faster Website Analytics Google is combining its tagging tools to make tracking website visits much easier without needing complex coding. These updates help websites load faster and allow users to visually track visitor actions in one place. For Mission Teams This consolidation could make analytics easier to manage for mission teams. Teams are encouraged to check their accounts when these changes are rolled out and familiarize themselves with the updates. https://www.seroundtable.com/google-tag-and-google-tag-manager-updated-41918.html Buffer Data Study Reveals Proven Instagram Growth Strategies A large study shows that posting helpful Instagram content three to five times a week helps accounts grow twice as fast. Creators should focus on using Reels, carousel posts, and replying to comments rather than trying to make viral videos. For Mission Teams Mission teams leveraging organic strategies should use consistent Reels and carousel posts to regularly share gospel messages with seekers who are looking for hope. Engaging with people in comment sections builds personal trust while maintaining safe digital privacy practices for your team. https://buffer.com/resources/grow-on-instagram/ WhatsApp Enhances Account Security Features WhatsApp added new security features, including stronger passwords for two-step verification and caller details for unfamiliar numbers. Users can now set up multiple passkeys across different devices to prevent hackers from taking over their accounts. For Mission Teams Missions teams and churches leveraging WhatsApp are encouraged to implement these passwords and passkeys to help keep their accounts secure. https://about.fb.com/news/2026/08/new-account-security-features-for-whatsapp/ Stay Equipped for Digital Engagement  Looking for ways to use digital tools to grow evangelism and disciple-making?
