Weekly Marketing Rundown - November. 15th, 2024

Hi everyone, In this week's edition of Kavanah Media's Weekly Marketing Rundown we will discuss Signal's new video call features, Vietnam's new social media requirements, countries with the least amount of internet access and more.

Signal Updates Video Calls

Signal has introduced upgraded video call features, making it more competitive with other platforms like Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams. Now Signal users can host larger video calls with improved quality, schedule calls, and share meeting links. These updates, coupled with the platform’s prioritization of security, make it a viable option for many.

For mission teams, Signal’s new video call capabilities could be a helpful tool for connecting with team members or holding Bible studies securely, especially in areas where privacy is crucial.

Vietnam Orders Social Media Companies to Provide User Identities

Vietnam has issued a new law requiring social media companies to share user identities with the government when requested. This rule is meant to help the government monitor and control online content, particularly to manage political opposition. Social media platforms like Facebook and TikTok may face pressure to comply, though it’s uncertain if they will follow through. Notably, Kavanah Media partners have shared that these companies have disclosed user identities to the government in the past.

For mission teams working in or near Vietnam, this law highlights the need for digital security, especially as political discussions online may come under scrutiny. With the risk of user information being shared with authorities, teams may need to consider alternative platforms for digital engagement and communications depending on how this plays out.

Google's AI Studio Can Generate SRT Files

Ad platforms’ emphasis on AI tools and auto-formatting can make ad creation more efficient, but auto-cropping often results in subtitles being cut off. Meta’s solution is to upload SRT files, but creating those isn’t always the easiest task. Well, now Google AI Studio can build one for you!

1. Visit the AI Studio website and log into your account.

2. Select Gemini 1.5 Pro 002 as your model.

3. Upload your video and enter this prompt:

“Analyze this video and provide a detailed transcript in [specify language] with proper timestamps (HH:MM:SS).”

4. The tool will transcribe the video into your chosen language.

5. Adjust pauses, reading speed, and consistency to ensure a natural flow.

The World’s Largest Unconnected Populations

A recent infographic highlights the countries with the largest populations lacking internet access. Limited internet access affects education, economic opportunities, and social connectivity, especially in lower-income areas. These “unconnected” populations represent a significant challenge—and opportunity—for global digital outreach.

For mission teams, understanding these unconnected regions is crucial when planning outreach and communication strategies. Countries with limited internet access might require alternative approaches like offline resources or SMS-based communication to reach local communities effectively.

Here’s a list of the largest unconnected populations:

• India – 684 million- 48% of the population

• China – 336 million- 24% of the population

• Pakistan – 132 million- 54% of the population

• Indonesia – 93 million- 33% of the population

• Nigeria – 123 million- 55% of the population

• Bangladesh – 96 million- 55% of the population

• Ethiopia – 103 million- 81% of the population

• Democratic Republic of the Congo – 76 million- 71% of the population

Facebook and Instagram Launch Ad-Free Subscriptions in Europe

Meta is offering ad-free subscriptions for Facebook and Instagram in Europe at reduced prices: €5.99/month on the web and €7.99 on mobile, with extra accounts costing €4-€5 each. EU users can also choose a free version with less personalized ads. These changes respond to EU regulatory demands, impacting how users engage with ads on the platforms.

It is not known what affects this may have with marketing efforts in the EU, but if popular, this change may force missions teams to adjust their digital engagement platforms. Advertisers, including teams running digital engagement projects, may see a drop in engagement.

Weekly Marketing Rundown - December 13th, 2024 Hi everyone! In this week's edition of Kavanah Media's Weekly Marketing Rundown we will discuss using Meta's new data restrictions, Blueksy's potential advertising, China's massive hack, and more. U.S. Officials Urge Americans to Use Encrypted Apps Amid Chinese Cyber Threats Following a significant cyberattack by Chinese hackers targeting U.S. government officials, American authorities are recommending the use of encrypted messaging apps like Signal and WhatsApp for secure communication. These apps offer end-to-end encryption, ensuring messages remain private even if intercepted. For mission teams the usage of encrypted platforms for communication is strongly encouraged. https://www.dailywire.com/news/u-s-officials-urge-americans-to-use-encrypted-apps-after-chinese-hack Bluesky CEO Discusses Social Media Innovation and Future Revenue Models Bluesky CEO Jay Graber is focused on reshaping social media by prioritizing user control and decentralization. While Bluesky currently avoids traditional advertising, Graber acknowledges that monetization strategies, including ads, may eventually be explored to sustain the platform. As Bluesky continues to grow, its focus on decentralization and user-centric design could offer unique opportunities for digital engagement strategies. https://techcrunch.com/2024/12/05/bluesky-ceo-jay-graber-is-reshaping-social-media-but-advertising-isnt-off-the-table/ How WhatsApp Became a Global Cultural Phenomenon WhatsApp has become a central communication tool worldwide, evolving from a simple messaging app into a global cultural force. In regions like Africa, South Asia, and Latin America, it serves as the backbone for personal and professional communication, often replacing traditional SMS and email. Its appeal lies in its affordability, ease of use, and encrypted messaging, which make it accessible even in areas with limited internet access. For mission teams, WhatsApp’s widespread reach and reliability make it a powerful tool for digital engagement, enabling group chats, media sharing, and community-building in regions where other platforms may not have the same penetration. https://restofworld.org/2024/how-whatsapp-became-a-global-cultural-force/ Meta Introduces New Data Use Restrictions - Religious Affiliations Meta is implementing stricter data use restrictions for ad targeting due to increased privacy regulations. Advertisers will face limitations on how third-party data and custom audiences can be utilized, aiming to protect user privacy and align with global standards. In particular they state: "Important: We'll start restricting how certain data sources can share data through Meta Business Tools in January 2025," and later they say that these restrictions will affect any data source that "is associated with individuals with specific religious or spiritual beliefs and practices." This will affect missions teams utilizing retargeting and landing pages in their digital strategies and perhaps more. Our team at Kavanah Media is currently researching and experimenting to find a solution to mitigate any hang-ups teams may face. Hear more about this on today's Christian Media Marketing Podcast here. https://matchnode.com/blog-and-podcasts/metas-new-data-restrictions/ Google Launches AI Video Generator to Expand Ad Content Google’s new AI-powered video generation tool aims to simplify ad creation, allowing advertisers to produce short video ads efficiently. This tool can adapt various elements, such as brand logos and promotional offers, to craft targeted ad content. While it enables easier ad production, it also raises concerns about contributing to an oversaturation of ads online. Mission teams leveraging digital platforms for engagement could benefit from using Google’s AI tool to produce quick, culturally relevant video content tailored to their audience quickly and efficiently. https://gizmodo.com/googles-new-ai-video-generator-is-made-to-fill-the-internet-with-even-more-ads-2000534023 Monthly Ad Idea  Get inspired with this month’s featured ad idea from our Ad Resource store! Meta Introduces AI-Edited Video Ads on Facebook and Instagram: Key Tools for Teams Meta has rolled out new AI-powered tools for video ads on Facebook and Instagram, making content creation more streamlined. These tools include automatic video trimming, scene selection, and format adjustments for different placements. Key features also include a video expansion tool, which resizes videos to fit various formats, an auto music tool that selects background music, and an image animation tool that brings static images to life with simple animations. Truth be told, Kavanah Media team members have seen these tools being quietly rolled out for some time. They have allowed for quicker creation of multiple ad variations, allowing images and videos to be shown in more ad placements. While Google remains the leading search engine, these rising alternatives are attracting users with innovative features that enhance search experiences. For teams, this trend emphasizes the need to diversify digital strategies. As users turn to platforms like TikTok for search, teams should adapt their SEO and content strategies to maintain visibility across various channels.  For more on this, click the link below: https://www.yahoo.com/?err=404&err_url YouTube Expands Shorts Length and Adds Templates: What Teams Should Know In order to compete with TikTok, YouTube is increasing the maximum length of Shorts and adding new video templates. This move allows creators to produce longer short-form content while using templates to streamline video creation. For teams, these updates mean greater flexibility in crafting short videos to engage audiences. With longer content and easy-to-use templates, creating videos should be even easier.  For more on this, click the link below:  https://www.theverge.com/2024/10/3/24260170/youtube-shorts-increased-length-templates-tiktok WhatsApp's New Contact-Saving Feature: What Teams Should Know WhatsApp is testing a feature that lets users save contacts directly within the app without storing them on their phone. If adopted this could simplify contact management for teams and offer some privacy benefits. For teams the advantages include: 1. Privacy: Contacts can be stored within the app, reducing the need to save personal numbers on your phone. 2. Efficiency: Easier access and management of contacts within WhatsApp itself. 3. Clutter-Free: Keep work-related contacts separate from personal ones without filling up your phone directory. This update can streamline communication and improve privacy, especially for teams in sensitive environments. The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) stated that platforms like Facebook cannot use all personal data without restrictions on time or type, meaning only a small portion of Meta's data pool will be permitted for advertising, even with user consent. Rulings like this are already affecting audience targeting. As data privacy laws tighten, advertisers will likely have less and less access for audience targeting. Teams may need to change their marketing strategies as a result.
